The Library Of Walks

Officially, the 'Library of Walks' was first shown during the art project 'Skin' [CC De Werft te Geel Belgium 2004] This library already had a history with the walk performance with poet Geert Vermeire during 'Uit hetzelfde hout gesneden/Cut out the same wood', [Beeldig Hof in Saksen ', CC Ter Vesten Beveren Belgium, summer 2003]. This along with the 'Studiolo' installation, a reconstruction of 'San Girolamo nello studio', [Antonello da Messina 1430-1479].

Video: this performative walk '(What) The Body Knows / The Blue Parade'' in the village of Psarades at Prespes is part of the Library of Walks that has been started by Stefaan van Biesen since 1990. From this ongoing process various applications grew, realized in Europe and Brasilia in collaboration with curator-writer Geert Vermeire. For Made Of Walking (V) in Prespes 2019, Stefaan van Biesen & Annemie Mestdagh, designed a portable nomadic library that is carried by a group of participants:

Walkers of the group: Yannis Ziogas, Natacha Antão Moutinho, Miguel Bandeira Duarte, Rosie Montford, Anna Villas Boas, Geert Vermeire, Chistopher Kaczmar, Marie-Anne Lerjen, Kristina Borg, Katerina Paisi, Juana Miranda, Raffaella Zammit, Lucia Masu, Emanuelle Klafiger, Ienke Kastelein, Caterina Giansiracusa.

The carriers become the artwork. In this way, a mental and energetic field transforms into a site-specific practice. Through the shared object or prop—functioning as a 'conductor'—they become physically and consciously aware of one another. Their sense of togetherness is heightened as they move in unison. While walking (and during pauses), they are invited to explore their surroundings with a heightened, observant awareness and to absorb the landscape.

Participants carry a portable library, wrapped in a flowing, streamlined canvas of ultramarine blue—a color that, intriguingly, had no name in ancient Greek. Its shape evokes the nearby Little Prespa Lake and subtly alludes to the journey and displacement of refugees. Along the way, participants are invited to observe their surroundings attentively and collect small, meaningful artifacts. These items are placed in PET bottles (or later in glass jars) and attached to the blue canvas. This act lends the walk a ritualistic dimension, gradually forming a collection that reflects the biotope where the action unfolds—an evolving archive of the natural and social identity of the place.

Being together in silence, carried away by a human energetic stream, walking as a sensitive experience, must lead to a collective act that sensitively reinforces the walk.

Library of Walks

When the project began in 2002, Stefaan van Biesen invited individuals to join him for a walk—an experience centered around memory, marked by a moment or detail that captured their attention and guided their journey. Each walk culminated in a sealed glass container, preserving that memory. Inside: photos, letters, notes, audio recordings, voices, or drawings—fragments of a unique walking experience. These "glass books" were placed in dialogue with the thousands of traditional books in a library, transforming the space into an artwork. Each glass invites reflection, acting as a vessel for personal narrative and shared memory.

The Art of Wandering
The size of each glass is determined by the walker and by what they choose to preserve—its dimensions are, in principle, irrelevant. Each glass container added to the library symbolically marks the walker's presence within the project. Accompanied by a uniform label—featuring the walker's name, the place, and the date of the walk—every contribution becomes part of a growing collective archive, a quiet testimony to the art of wandering.

This evolving Library of Walks is shaped by the diverse contributions of its participants. Each walk is unique, and every glass container becomes a silent witness to a personal journey and its accompanying experiences. At the artist’s invitation, the walker is asked to approach the landscape as a focused visitor—an attentive observer. The “landscape” can be any urban or natural environment through which one moves. In this context, the body becomes an instrument of perception—a resonant presence that engages with the surroundings through mindful awareness. It serves as a constantly shifting center within an optical and emotional field, offering a panoramic, embodied experience of place.

The Library of Walks

Launched in 2002 by Stefaan van Biesen, The Library of Walks began with a simple yet evocative gesture: inviting individuals to take a walk and preserve a memory—something that drew their attention and shaped their journey—sealed in a glass container. Each "glass book" might contain photographs, letters, notes, voice recordings, found natural objects, or drawings—a reflection meant to capture a meaningful moment in motion.

These glass vessels are placed in dialogue with thousands of books in a traditional library setting, where the installation becomes a quiet, contemplative artwork. Each container invites the viewer to reflect on the experience it holds and the journey it represents.

The Art of Wandering

The size and contents of each glass are determined by the walker—what they wish to keep, what moment they want to preserve. Its dimensions are intentionally unimportant. What matters is the presence: each glass added to the library symbolically marks the walker's participation in the project. A uniform label accompanies every contribution, listing the walker's name, the location, and the date of the walk.

Participants are encouraged to walk with heightened awareness—to observe attentively and collect what draws their attention, placing these small artifacts into a glass jar. This practice arises from a more mindful way of walking, where ecology, perception, and presence intertwine. The body becomes a moving center of awareness, resonating with the environment—a sensitive subject within an optical and emotional field.

Exhibitions

The Library of Walks has been exhibited in various locations across Europe and Brazil, including:
– The Jardim Botânico, Brasília, Brazil (curated by Geert Vermeire, 2012)
– The island of Tinos, Greece
Libraries as Gardens, Analogio Festival, Athens, 2018

Each installation expands the archive, offering new voices, new landscapes, and new reflections on the act of walking.

The Library as Perceived by the Contemporary Artist

Contemporary art often approaches the library as a sacred space—both shrine and mausoleum. In Stefaan van Biesen’s installation SKIN, this reflective gaze is made tangible. The work presents a reconstruction of an imaginary library, inspired by the one depicted in Saint Jerome in His Study (ca. 1474), a painting by Antonello da Messina housed in the National Gallery, London.

In the painting, the hermit scholar reads within a wooden, platform-like structure set inside a Gothic interior—his private library. A few openings offer glimpses of a serene landscape beyond, though the reader seems unaware of his surroundings. Birds gather at the threshold, singing in an unintelligible language, as if trying to bridge the silence between nature and knowledge.

Van Biesen reimagines this enclosed space, situating the imaginary library within a real one—creating an open, transitional space that invites movement without demand for entry. It becomes a walk-through void, simultaneously within and beyond the world. At once a conceptual intervention and a precise architectural reconstruction, SKIN makes the once-imagined library physically accessible, inviting viewers not only to observe, but to inhabit the act of reading and being.

The Museum of Walks
Model: Spaziergangwissenschaft / Wanderlust
A philosophical scale model for the urban flâneur

This conceptual model is grounded in the observation of human behavior within museum spaces. It reflects on how visitors navigate curated environments—and how they often resist the prescribed paths laid out for them.

While many follow the guided routes of audio tours or wall texts, some visitors instinctively seek their own way. They may walk slowly, skip certain rooms, or choose to engage deeply with only a few selected works. This response is understood as a tactic—a personal strategy of deviation from the strategic plan imposed by the institution.

In essence, this model captures a familiar human impulse: the desire to peer around corners, explore side passages, and wander off the beaten path—whether in a city or a museum. It values the reclaimed autonomy of the visitor, empowering a more intimate and individual experience.

The experiential viewer—unlike the conventional tourist—moves through space with quiet attentiveness. In urban terms, this figure is the flâneur, or the Einzelgänger—the solitary walker who drifts through the environment, attuned to its rhythms, fragments, and serendipities.
